Top five things your home needs

Contemporary living room concept

Every home needs a few basic things to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable living experience. Of course there are far more than five things that should be considered to achieve a harmonious well designed home. Start with these five things and you’ll be off to a pretty good start.

Here are my top five:

ONE. Comfortable furniture: Invest in seating that is comfortable and inviting. Sofas, chairs, and ottomans should provide plenty of support and comfort for your family and guests. Consider your fabric options depending on the type of use your furniture will receive. For example if you have young children perhaps a leather you can wipe down will be more forgiving or a loose covers that can be removed and washed.

TWO. Appropriate lighting: Good lighting can make a huge difference in the look and feel of your home. Consider lighting options that are both practical and aesthetically pleasing. Layer your lighting; in a room with only recessed down lights add a floor lamp in an empty corner or tables lamps on a buffet or side table. Once you have these in place depending on the occasion you can pick and choose which lighting layers you are going to use.

THREE. Storage solutions: Clutter can make a home feel small and cramped. Invest in a variety of storage solutions, from shelves to baskets, to keep your home organised and tidy. Remove all items and purposefully put back items that have meaning to you. Take a step back each time you add an item and decide if it feels right in the space.

FOUR. Investing in quality pieces: It really is true that you get what you pay for. Think about investing more into the pieces that are going to get the most use within your home. For example a sofa will get loads of wear over the years so you want to make sure you’re buying the best your budget will allow. Other pieces you may choose to invest more into depending on the way you live could be a solid timber dining table, a floor rug or outdoor furniture.

FIVE. Personal touches: Personalise your home with artwork, photographs, and other decor that reflects your style and personality. Also give consideration to the architectural style of your home. For example if your home was built in the 1950s and has a mid century facade you may choose to decorate your home with a modern mid century vibe. No matter what always choose a style that you love and are drawn too instead of following current trends, this will make your house feel like your home which you’ll love living in for years to come.
