Designing a Dreamy tween/teen bedroom
TWEEN BOY BEDROOM
COASTAL STYLE - CALMING COLOUR PALETTE - NATURAL TEXTURES
Your Tween/Teen can be a complicated character! With them retreating more and more to their bedrooms as the years pass why not give your tween/teen a bedroom they only dream of.
One of the first things to consider when designing a tween/teen bedroom is making sure that it is as functional as it is fun. If space allows I always specify a study desk either free standing or built into an alcove in the room. Then they really have no excuse to avoid getting their assignments done.
Tween/teen rooms are so much fun to put together. I love to go a bit crazy by layering patterns and choosing a playful colour palette to work with.
I always like to work closely with the tween/teen who’s room I am designing. Being able to develop an understanding of their personal style is key, so the end result is a design that reflects their unique style and personality.
Bedrooms for any aged child are the one room in the house where I abandon cohesion with the rest of the home. You want them to feel like this is their space and not yours.
Tweens/teens seem to accumulate a lot of stuff so it’s crucial to pack in the most amount of storage possible into their rooms. This will limit the amount of mess and clutter, if they have a home for everything to go. Make sure to include these; shelves, bedside tables with drawers, desk, wardrobe storage systems, wall hooks, and baskets.
TEEN GIRL BEDROOM
PLAYFUL PATTERNS - CONTEMPORARY STYLE - FEMININE COLOUR PALETTE
A lot of tweens/teens like to keep their rooms closed up. Maybe thats because of laziness or the fact they turn into vampires when the reach the age of thirteen. I like to maximise natural light, as natural light can help promote a healthy circadian rhythm and make the room appear bigger. I hang a combination of block out and sheer curtains to allow the sunshine so come through but still provide them privacy. Even better if it’s electronic and all it takes is the push of a button to open up those block outs each morning.
When selecting wallpaper I don’t choose from the kids selection. I choose a wallpaper that is appropriate for any age range, that way it will grow with your tween/teen or if the bedrooms function changes you won’t have to re-paper or paint.
Now off you go enjoy creating a space with your tween/teen to relax in and where they feel like their own unique style is embraced. If you are overwhelmed or just don’t know where to begin, consider engaging with a designer who can streamline this process for you and bring your tween/teens dream a reality.
